I did it a few years ago on a 55 Chevy. Using a DC clamp-on multimeter, the max I saw was around 35 amps! Of course the car had a basic radio, no electric radiator fans, no power windows or seats, and no computers. Engine was running and battery voltage was around But, hey, I still like the 12SI design, and the 2x safety margin of even 78 amps, at least for my non-power doo-dad applications.
It's not a 2x safety margin, because alternators do not put out their full rated amperes at idle rpm. I wouldn't expect more than a third of rated output at idle from any alternator.
The idle is a little lopey, so had to put in a stall converter to allow for the tranny to not drag the engine down. Canada Posts 1, You set idle speed with it in Park. The instructions do say "in gear" for Auto trans, but it does sound like a misprint. The engine will race in neutral, with a IAC of in gear. Should be in neutral, and then the IAC will be at say 40 in gear at target idle speed.

Yes there are some unansered questions but I am going to surmise from what you have supplied that you are running an engine that was not made to idle around, and at least in the not so far distant past you have to clean and engine once in a while of you were not up to operating range.
What you have described is designed to load up at idle. I keep my small block I have had it idleing so slow that you could count the fan blades but it would not pull from that speed and that is also very hard on the lower end.
